In a surprise move, the Phillies have signed free agent first baseman Carlos Santana to a 3-year contract worth $60 million. The 31-year old Santana previously played with the Indians and hit .259/.363 /.455 with 23 HR and 79 RBI last season.
With his numbers, he is certainly expected to start for the Phillies. This means Rhys Hoskins could be moving to the outfield, or possibly even to another team. If Hoskins stays, the Phillies will be overflowing with outfielders and will likely trade one of them, perhaps for some pitching.
This deal certainly raises more questions than it answers. Stay tuned, more news and analysis from the 2017 Winter Meetings to come!
