Morosi: Phillies have entertained signing two free agent pitchers

Oh boy.

Jon Morosi, who earlier wrote about the Phillies talking to Lance Lynn, is now saying the team has entertained signing two of the remaining free agent starters.

Now, free agent starters include people like Clay Buchholz and Jeremy Hellickson, but we’re assuming Morosi is talking about the trio of Lynn, Jake Arrieta and Alex Cobb.

Morosi also says it’s not likely to happen, because you know, he has to hedge his bets. But anyway, it is plausible that the Phils, who have money, would sign two of these guys.

And hey, if it’s Lynn and Cobb for separate two-year deals, that’s fine. If it’s Arrieta and Cobb or Arrieta and Lynn for separate three and two-year deals, respectively, cool too. Basically, three years maximum on Arrieta and two on the other guys. Beyond that you’re risking losing value, you’re risking making it hard to lock up guys as they hit free agency, and you’re risking blocking prospects and other folks from being part of the 25-man.

The only true downside is the Phils would lose two more draft picks plus international slot money by signing any two of these three (they already have lost one with the Carlos Santana signing). That would be a lot, and the Phils would need to be more exact in their drafting (which is almost impossible), but it would … uh … #BeBold.

Anyway, that’s the news! Two free agents! Get excited … for Buchholz and Hellickson. Just kidding.
