Every Odubel has his day: Phillies win 2-1

Give it up for Odubel Herrera. The joy of watching him hustle out a big hit, or make a ridiculous play in center field. Friday against the Pirates he was on full display, tripling home the eventual winning run in the eighth inning of a 2-1 win.

Herrera, who had two hits on the evening and made a nice diving catch late in the game, is now slashing .343/.387/.872 with seven extra-base hits on the young season. He already has accumulated 1.2 WAR.

The top three hitters in the lineup each had two hits, while Rhys Hoskins added an RBI groundout. We won’t talk about his horrendous baserunning that led to a terrible double play in that eighth inning.

Luckily the Phils pitching was on point once again. Ben Lively threw six solid innings (1 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 3 BB), while Adam Morgan, Luis Garcia and Hector Neris were strong to finish.

The Phillies are now 12-7 and can win the series against the Pirates on #NolaDay Saturday.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
