2018 Gameday

Gameday 2018: Phillies (6-5) at Rays (3-9)

250px-Tampa_Bay_Rays.svg.pngAh the old 2008 World Series rematch, now 10 years later. Of course these two organizations – let alone teams – look nothing like they did in 2008.

The Phillies will try to move to two over .500 with a win tonight against a scuffling Tampa Bay Rays squad. They’re 3-9, attempting to win with three actual starters in their rotation (they have tons of injuries and are using bullpen days as fourth and fifth starters). The Phils are tentatively going to see a bullpen day on Sunday; otherwise, they get probably the team’s best two pitchers in this series. Hurrah!

Gametime: 7:10 p.m.

The lineup:

  1. Hernandez – 2B
  2. Santana – 1B
  3. Herrera – CF
  4. Hoskins – LF
  5. Williams – DH
  6. Kingery – 3B
  7. Altherr – RF
  8. Alfaro – C
  9. Crawford – SS

Pitchers: Vince Velasquez (1-1, 5.19 ERA) vs. Jake Faria (0-1, 14.29 ERA)

As the game is in Tampa Bay, it’s designated hitter time! Williams gets first crack, with Gabe Kapler emphasizing outfield defense with power-pitching Velasquez on the hill. Maikel Franco hits the bench.

Your Gameday Beer: The Tampa-St. Pete beer scene has improved over the last few years, led by Cigar City. We’ll go tonight with its Lactobacillus Guava Grove, a yeasty sour with some real nice tropical fruit on top. This beer tastes like how Florida should feel. And considering it’s like 80 degrees in the Delaware Valley, it’s the perfect day for one of these babies. Sip and savor.

Go Phillies!
