Minor League Mash-Up: Here comes Seranthony Dominguez

Seranthony Dominguez

It’s time for our weekly look at the prospects down on the farm.

Records

  • Lehigh Valley IronPigs: 11-10
  • Reading Fightin’ Phils: 8-12
  • Clearwater Threshers: 9-15
  • Lakewood Blueclaws: 14-10

Notable Performances

  • Sixto Sanchez dazzled in his third start of the season, going seven innings and allowing four hits, one walk and one run. Sanchez struck out two, but more notably, the Phils top prospect thrice faced Blue Jays slugger Josh Donaldson, who is on a rehab assignment, and retired him all three times.
  • No. 21 prospect Spencer Howard was dominant for Lakewood on Thursday. The 2017 second-round pick went six scoreless innings while only surrendering two hits and one walk. Howard struck out seven.
  • Enyel De Los Santos continues to impress for Lehigh Valley. The right-hander went 5.2 innings Sunday, allowing no runs while only giving up six hits and one walk. De Los Santos struck out three.
  • No. 5 prospect Adam Haseley went 2-for-4 with two doubles on Wednesday. He also drove in three and scored a run.

Still Going Strong

  • No. 13 prospect Enyel De Los Santos continues to be a star this season for Lehigh Valley. In four starts, he has posted a 1.40 ERA going 19.1 innings with 25 strikeouts and only six walks. He also hasn’t allowed a home run. With Lively hurt and Velasquez struggling, a possible call-up may be looming.
  • No. 11 prospect Seranthony Dominguez is on a beeline to the Phillies bullpen. After posting a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings for Reading, Dominguez made his triple-A debut on Sunday going two scoreless innings and striking out three. In 15 innings, the fireballer has struck out 21. Don’t be surprised if he’s in red pinstripes by the summer.
  • No. 21 prospect Spencer Howard has been crushing it for Lakewood. In 19 innings of work, he boasts a 1.89 ERA, and more impressively, his strikeout-to-walk ratio is 29-2.
  • Adam Haseley has finally got it going for Clearwater. Last year’s first-round pick is up to .280 with his batting average and he has seven extra base hits and 12 RBI. If there’s one thing he needs to improve, it’s his walk rate as he’s only walked twice this year.
  • No. 15 prospect Roman Quinn continues to push for a call-up. He’s slashing .318/.384/.439 with nine stolen bases and 11 runs scored.

Still Struggling

  • No. 3 prospect Adonis Medina is new to the struggling list.  His ERA sits at 7.98 and opponents are hitting .333 off of him. He has walked eight compared to 10 strikeouts.
  • No. 4 prospect Mickey Moniak continues his struggles at the plate with a slash line of .213/.228/.258. He’s also walking once per every 11 strikeouts.
  • No. 7 prospect JoJo Romero is still getting roughed up for Reading. After four starts, his ERA is 7.20 and he’s averaging a walk every two innings. He’s also surrendered five long balls already, a possible move to the bullpen may be coming.
  • Fellow Reading pitcher Franklyn Kilome has also hit some struggles. His ERA has jumped to 5.60 and he’s given up 19 hits and 10 walks in 17.2 innings.
  • Lakewood second baseman Daniel Brito has had a rough 2018 so far. He’s hitting .171 with an OBP of .227. His power has been fine, though, as six of his 12 hits are for extra bases.
  • Former first-round pick and No. 16 prospect Cornelius Randolph is struggling for Reading. He’s slashing .159/.206/.238 with only three walks, compared to 20 strikeouts.

Injury Report

  • No.6 prospect Jhailyn Ortiz has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with an undisclosed injury (it was soon revealed to be a sore left shoulder). Ortiz has been struggling for Lakewood with a .158 average, only three extra-base hits and 25 strikeouts in 57 at bats.
