The big day is finally here. Tonight we will find out who the Phillies will take third overall in tonight’s first-year player draft.
Here’s some notable players selected third overall in the MLB draft.
There are a few good third basemen in this group, and it’s very possible the Phillies will be selecting a player who plays that position.
In their latest mock draft, FanGraphs discussed this scenario.
The way this would happen would involve Detroit blinking at Mize’s price, which we (again, if we were the Phillies) could inflate by letting Mize’s camp know we’ve got an over-slot bonus waiting for him at the third pick. If Detroit is very conscious of the money left for their next pick, this could become a larger factor, though we’re told they still prefer Mize to Bart if money is no factor. It’s possible somewhere in the mid-$ 7 millions could do this, and Philly could make this work by going way under slot later (maybe a few times) by paying $100,000 bonus at their next pick, in the 4th round, to a senior.
It’s very unlikely that this scenario would occur, but it’s worth noting and definitely something to keep an eye on.
If Mize does in fact go in the top two, with Joey Bart, the Phillies will pick from a group of three college players: Wichita State third baseman Alec Bohm, Florida pitcher Brady Singer, and Oregon State infielder Nick Madrigal.
Final Mock
1. Detroit Tigers
The pick: Casey Mize, RHP, Auburn
The scenario brought forth by FanGraphs is music to Phillies fans’ ears, but I feel the Tigers will do everything in their power to make sure the best player in this draft is theirs.
2. San Francisco Giants
The pick: Joey Bart, C, Georgia Tech
After this weekend, I’ve had enough of the Giants and they get the pick right before the Phils. Those evil Giants will take Bart if he’s there; we’ve talked about the scenario involving Buster Posey moving to first base numerous times and it makes sense.
3. Philadelphia Phillies
The pick: Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State
I’m sticking with Bohm. Singer is a close second, but I feel the Phillies will value a power hitter who can control the strike zone more. Bohm is a great offensive talent, and if it wasn’t for his red flags defensively, he may have been in the first pick discussion.
4. Chicago White Sox
The pick: Brady Singer, RHP, Florida
5. Cincinnati Reds
The pick: Nick Madrigal, INF, Oregon State
6. New York Mets
The pick: Jonathan India, 3B, Florida
7. San Diego Padres
The pick: Matt Liberatore, LHP, Mountain Range HS
8. Atlanta Braves
The pick: Cole Winn, RHP, Orange Lutheran
9. Oakland Athletics
The pick: Travis Swaggerty, OF, South Alabama
10. Pittsburgh Pirates
The pick: Carter Stewart, RHP, Eau Gallie HS
This should be the last time the Phillies will be worrying about a top 10 pick for hopefully a very long time. No matter who they end up getting, they should be getting an impact prospect who can hopefully help the Phillies win a lot of games for a lot of years.
