The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t had multiple All-Stars since 2013, when both Cliff Lee and Domonic Brown represented the club at Citi Field. Barring something drastic, that trend appears likely to continue for another year.
The MLB released the final All-Star voting update – with fan voting set to conclude on Friday morning at 12 a.m. ET. In the update, center fielder Odubel Herrera was the only Phillies position player even in the discussion:
Despite a 45-game on-base streak and a five-game home run streak in 2018, Herrera appears unlikely to make his second All-Star Game in three years. The 26-year-old is currently 11th among National League outfielders in All-Star voting. For reference, there were seven outfielders on the 2017 National League All-Star roster.
Rhys Hoskins’ month of May – which saw him bat .161 and strike out 32 times – likely ended any case that the 25-year-old left fielder had. He, of course, broke his jaw against the Los Angeles Dodgers late in May, which caused him to be placed on the 10-day disabled list. Still, just past the halfway mark of the season, Hoskins’ offensive numbers look pretty impressive – he’s slashing .253/.370/.490 with 14 home runs, 51 RBIs, 46 walks and a 12.6 offensive WAR. Hoskins has struggled mightily in his first year as a full-time left fielder, however, as FanGraphs says he’s been the worst regular left fielder in terms of defensive metrics.
Gabe Kapler vouched for second baseman Cesar Hernandez’s case last month to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. FanGraphs says
Hernandez has been the National League’s fourth best fielding second baseman in 2018. Per FanGraphs, he’s been the sixth best offensive second baseman in the sport in 2018. His 15.1 percent walk percentage is by far the highest number among qualified second baseman. And yet, he hasn’t been in the top five among National League second baseman in any voting updates.Fans don’t vote for pitchers, as the pitching staffs are voted on by coaches and players around the league. Regardless of who decides what pitchers appear in the All-Star Game, Aaron Nola is a lock to represent the Phillies at the midsummer classic. The 25-year-old is 10-2 with a 2.48 ERA, 2.77 FIP and 3.3 fWAR in 17 starts. Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom are ahead of him in the National League Cy Young Award race, but depending on how each pitcher’s schedule shakes out, it’s not impossible that Nola could be tabbed to start in the All-Star Game.
The MLB All-Star Game will take place at Nationals Park on Tuesday, July 17 at 8 p.m. ET.
