Roy Halladay’s posthumous induction onto the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame may go down as one of the most memorable moments in the history of Citizens Bank Park. Charlie Manuel told a pretty incredible story about Halladay, who he managed for parts of four seasons. Roy’s wife Brandy, as she did at his public service last November, universally amazed with the strength she showed giving what must have been an impossible speech. But among many tear-jerking moments, the most notable moment in the ceremony came when Halladay’s former battery-mate, Carlos Ruiz, unveiled his Wall of Fame plaque.
After unveiling Halladay’s plaque, Ruiz touched his lips with his fingers and then touched the plaque, as if to give a kiss to his late teammate:
Ruiz, who spent parts of 11 seasons in Philadelphia, formed a bond with Halladay upon his acquisition prior to the 2010 season. He was behind the plate when Halladay threw a perfect game in Florida against the Marlins on May 29, 2010. He threw Brandon Phillips out at first base on Oct. 6, 2010 to clinch Halladay’s postseason no-hitter. When Halladay won the 2010 National League Cy Young Award, he gave Ruiz a replica of the award
, with his nickname “Chooch” engraved on it. And, of course, the best thing (and perhaps only good thing) that ever happened the MLB 2K series was Halladay’s ad paying homage to Ruiz:More From Phillies Nation
