Larry Shenk’s Phillies Minor League Report: 5/27/19

Phillies Nation is honored to have Larry Shenk among the ranks of our regular contributors.

“The Baron” is the former Philadelphia Phillies head of community relations, a role in which he served the organization for more than four decades. Larry is also a 2018 inductee to the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.

In addition to the Phillies alumni and history work which Larry shares with readers here at Phillies Nation, his “Minor League Report” pieces now also run with us all during the season as well.

Lehigh Valley, International League North Division

**IronPigs (25–21) fell, 6–2, to the Buffalo Bisons who had 3 home runs among their 7 hits. Loss dropped LV 1.5 games behind division-leading SWB . . . Bisons have won 2 of 3 with the series finale at 1:35 this afternoon, Tom Eshelman (0–3) . . . Pigs head for Pawtucket after the game. Four-game series with the Red Sox starts with a doubleheader on Tuesday evening (Cole Irvin).

Pitching: LP: Drew Anderson (0–4), 6.2–4–3–3–3–1, 2 HR, wild pitch, hit batter; left game trailing, 3–2; 11 ground ball outs . . . Josh Martin, 1–0–0–0–1–3 and Josh Tols, 1.1–3–3–3–0–1, HR.

Hitting: IronPigs hit for the cycle, single by DH Shane Robinson, double by SS Malquin Canelo, triple by RF Ali Castillo and a home run by C Deivy Grullon (#9).

Reading, Eastern League Eastern Division

**Fightin Phils (27–18) swept a doubleheader (7-inning games) from the Senators in Harrisburg . . . After an 11–2 loss in the series opener, Reading has won 3 in a row, allowing a total of 2 runs . . . Series ends at 12 noon today, JoJo Romero (0–1, 2–2 overall) . . . Fightins are 1 game out of first place and 1/2 game out of second . . . Team leads EL in stolen bases (45).

Game #1: 7–1 decision . . . Reading iced the game with a 5-run seventh on a 2-run HR by 1B Darick Hall #(7) and a 3-run HR by pinch hitter Josh Stephen (#2) . . . SS Arquimedes Gamboa, 2–3, walk, double, run, RBI, 2 stolen bases. RF Mickey Moniak, 2–4, run, RBI; extended hitting streak to 11 games . . . WP: Adonis Medina (2–2), 5–5–1–1–2–4; first-pitch strikes, 18–22. Followed by Jeff Singer, 1–0–0–0–0–0 and Connor Brogdon, 1–0–0–0–0–1.

Game #2: 1–0 final . . . A sixth-inning single by CF Adam Haseley followed by an RBI double by 1B Darick Hall produced the lone run . . . RF Mickey Moniak, a defensive replacement, was 0–1 ending his hitting streak at 11 . . . WP: Jose Taveras, activated from the rehab program in Clearwater, made his first appearance, 5–2–0–0–0–4; only allowed 2 base runners. SV: Aaron Brown (#1), 2–2–0–0–0–3.

Clearwater, Florida State League North Division

**Threshers (26–24) swept a 4-game series in Jupiter as 3 pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts, 5–0 final. Staff has 484 strikeouts, most in the FSL . . . Win improved road trip record to 6–2. League-wide day off today . . . 11-game road trip resumes Tuesday night in Port Charlotte, a 3-game series vs. the Stone Crabs . . . Threshers are in third place, 3.5 games out of first and 1/2 game out of second.

Pitching: WP: Colton Eastman (2–2), 7–1–0–0–2–11, career-high in strikeouts; had no-hitter for 6.2 innings; retired first 10 batters before an error allowed a base runner; 84 pitches, 58 strikes; 29 fast balls, 29 change-ups, 26 curves . . . Zach Warren

, 1–1–0–0–0–2 and Grant Dyer, 1–0–0–0–0–1 completed Clearwater’s fifth shutout.

Hitting: Scored 3 in the third and 2 in the sixth . . . RF Jhailyn Ortiz, who slugged a go-ahead 2-run homer the previous game, gave the Threshers a 2–0 with a 2-run double, one of 2 hits . . . 2B Dan Brito, 2–3, walk, run, RBI . . . LF Jake Scheiner, 2–4, run, RBI, stolen base . . . CF Ben Aklinski, 2–4, run . . . Team leads FSL in average (.259), runs (432), slugging (.392), OPS (.714).

Lakewood, South Atlantic League North Division

**BlueClaws (17–32) edged Kannapolis, 5–4, a walk-off win in the 10th inning for the second game in a row. Lakewood scored in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Claws last 3 wins at home have been walk-offs . . . Series continues at 6:35 tonight in Lakewood, Victor Santos (2–4).

Pitching: 5 different pitchers were used by the winners; allowed 8 hits and 8 walks . . . ND: Dominic Pipkin, 3.2–3–2–2–5–2, wild pitch . . . WP: Oscar Marcellino (1–1), 1–0–0–0–1–1.

Hitting: LF Luke Miller delivered a 2-out, 2-strike single to drive in SS Jonathan Guzman with the winning run. Miller is 5–11 with 3 RBI in 3 games in Lakewood . . . 1B Cole Stobbe tied the game with a 2-out RBI single in the ninth . . . Guzman, Miller and Stobbe each had 2 hits as did RF James Smith . . . CF Carlos De La Cruz doubled in a pair of runs.
