Phillies blown out in final game of series versus Brewers, 9-1

The Phillies had a performance to forget Sunday, losing 9-1 to the Brewers in the final game of the three-game series in Milwaukee. The Phillies had just one run and one hit, while their pitching allowed four home runs.

The scoring started off when Ben Gamel hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the third. It was Gamel’s third home run of the season, and it gave Milwaukee a 1-0 edge over the Phillies:

It would continue to get uglier for Phillies pitching in the bottom of the fourth. Yasmani Grandal hit a 411- foot solo home run to left-center field, giving the Brewers a 2-0 lead. It was Grandal’s 10th home run of the year. Following that, Hernan Perez had a single. Two batters later, Brandon Woodruff had himself a double that scored Perez, making it 3-0 Brewers.

The game was finally blown wide open in the bottom of the fifth. Yelich started off the inning with his league-leading 21st home run, a solo shot that gave the Brewers a 4-0 lead over Philadelphia:

Ryan Braun, who continues to kill the Phillies, then got himself a double (he was then able to advance to third on a wild pitch). Later on, Yasmani Grandal struck again, hitting a grounder that was able to score Braun. With two outs, Hernan Perez had himself home run. It was a solo home run, his fifth in 2019, and it put the Brewers up 6-0. After a single and a walk followed the home run, Woodruff once again displayed his bat, nabbing an RBI single that scored Eric Thames. That gave the Brewers a 7-0 lead.

Until the sixth inning, the Phillies had not gotten a hit, nor had they gotten a man on base. That finally changed when Andrew Knapp had his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right. That made it a 7-1 game:

One nice note from the blowout today was the debut of J.D. Hammer. Before being called up, Hammer had an ERA of 1.61 in the minors. He displayed why he is such a valuable relieving prospect, getting a 1-2-3 inning and one strikeout in the top of the seventh.

Ben Gamel had his second home run of the day in the bottom of the eighth, a two-run home run that gave the Brewers a 9-1 lead. That would end up being the final score as the Phillies fall to 31-22 on the season. However, they did win the series against Milwaukee. They’ll have a day off tomorrow before playing the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Zach Eflin did not have the best day. He pitched just 3.2 innings, giving up six hits and three runs, all earned. Eflin allowed one walk and struck out four batters. He threw 75 pitches, and 48 of those went for strikes.

Woodruff game to play today. In eight innings, Woodruff allowed just one run and one hit, both of which came from Knapp’s home run. Woodruff allowed no walks, and had 10 strikeouts. Woodruff was also two of three at the plate, collecting two RBIs.
