Scott Kingery stays hot as Phillies bounce back to beat Diamondbacks

The Phillies desperately needed a bounce-back victory Tuesday after getting clobbered, 13-8, by the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday night. They did just that as they defeated Arizona 7-4 to move to 38-29 on the season.

Jake Arrieta took the mound for the Phillies, while Jon Duplantier got the start for the Diamondbacks. The Phillies were able to get on the board in the bottom of the second. After two straight singles by J.T. Realmuto and Jay Bruce, Scott Kingery delivered a three-run home run that gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead. It was Kingery’s seventh home run of the season:

Sean Rodriguez followed up Kingery’s home run with a single, and was later able to score on a Bryce Harper double, his 21st of the season. That made it 4-0 Philadelphia.

The Diamondbacks would cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff double by David Peralta, which was followed by a Nick Ahmed walk, Carson Kelly was able to drive in two runs thanks to a double to right-center field:

The Diamondbacks continued to chip away at the Phillies lead.

In the top of the fifth, Jarrod Dyson started things off for Arizona with a walk, which was followed by a Ketel Marte single. With runners on the corners, Eduardo Escobar delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Dyson, making it 4-3 Phillies.

However, the Phillies would strike back in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Rhys Hoskins was able to draw a walk. J.T. Realmuto would follow that walk up with a hit down the left field line. Peralta’s throw from left field was off line, allowing Hoskins to score and Realmuto to reach third. Realmuto was then able to score on a Jay Bruce single, making it a 6-3 Phillies ballgame.

The Phillies would add another run in the bottom of the sixth, when Rhys Hoskins delivered an RBI single that scored Phil Gosselin from second base. That would give the Phillies seven runs on the night.

The Diamondbacks would get one more run back thanks to a Marte solo home run, but that would be the last run they scored:

In the ninth, Hector Neris notched his 14th save in as many attempts in 2019.

With the win, the Phillies assure that they will stay at least in a tie in first place in the National League East. At the time of publication, the Atlanta Braves are leading over the Pittsburgh Pirates, but stuck in a rain delay.

Arrieta had himself a quality start this evening, pitching six innings while giving up three runs, all earned. He allowed allowed six hits, surrendered four walks and struck out five batters. He threw 105 pitches, with 63 of them going for strikes.
Duplantier didn’t fair as well as Arrieta did. In just three innings pitched, Duplantier gave up four runs, seven hits and one walk, while striking out just one batter.

Phillies Nuggets Player of the Game: Jay Bruce

This is one of those games where a number of players shined. Those stand-outs include Jake Arrieta and Scott Kingery. However, Jay Bruce demonstrated his abilities both at the plate and in the field. He was two for three when batting tonight, getting his 10th and 11th hits in the past seven games, while earning another RBI, run scored and working a walk. In addition, Bruce made a diving grab in the top of the third that prevented at least one run from scoring:
