Each year, the Philadelphia Phillies award their top minor league player and pitcher with the Paul Owens Award. The award is named in honor of the late Paul Owens, who spent 48 years in the Phillies organization as a scout, farm director, general manager, manager and senior adviser.
The Phillies announced that 2018 first-round pick Alec Bohm and 2017 fifth-round pick Ethan Lindow as the 2019 recipients of the Paul Owens Award. Bohm is ranked as the Phillies top prospect by MLB.com while Lindow is not on the Top 30 list.
Bohm, 23, put together a tremendous season across three minor league levels in 2019. He began the year with Class ‘A’ Lakewood. The former Wichita State product hit .367 in 22 games with the Blueclaws before earning a promotion to Advanced ‘A’ Clearwater in a pitcher-friendly Florida State League. Still, Bohm looked strong, finishing with a .329 average to go along with 10 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 27 RBIs. Towards the end of June, he joined Double-A Reading and helped lead them to their first playoff berth since 2016. Although Bohm hit just .269 in 63 games for Reading, his on-base percentage sat at a solid .344. He launched 14 homers and drove in 42 runs while also playing a steady third base for the Fightins. Between Lakewood, Clearwater and Reading, Bohm finished 2019 with a slash line of .305/.378/.518 with 30 doubles, 21 home runs and 80 RBIs.
Lindow, 20, was probably the best Phillies pitching prospect statistically during the 2019 season. He started the season with Class ‘A’ Lakewood, like Bohm, and posted a 5-2 record to go along with an ERA of 2.66 in 23 appearances, 13 of which were starts. He earned a late season promotion to Clearwater on August 12 and started three games for the Threshers. Lindow allowed just three earned runs in 16 innings, good for an ERA of 1.69. All in all during 2019, he held the opposition to a .218 average in 26 games.
