According to a report from NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, former Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price has become a serious candidate to become the Philadelphia Phillies new pitching coach.

Price, 57, was a pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners (2001–2006), Arizona Diamondbacks (2007-2009), and Reds (2010-2013) prior to taking over as the Reds manager in 2014. He spent four full seasons as manager in Cincinnati before getting fired 18 games into the 2018 season.

Price was recently offered to return as the Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach job, but reportedly declined despite interest in coaching again. Salisbury notes that his declining this offer may signify interest in another position available, which could include the Phillies.

Beyond Price, other candidates listed by Salisbury include former New York Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild and in-house options Dave Lundquist and Rafael Chaves.

Rothschild, 65, was fired on Monday after spending nine seasons as the Yankees pitching coach. Seven of those seasons were spent with new Phillies manager Joe Girardi, making Rothschild a clear candidate for the position.

Lundquist was the Phillies assistant pitching coach in 2019 after spending 2018 as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs pitching coach.

Chaves has been the organization’s minor league pitching coordinator since 2014. Before that, he spent two seasons as the Mariners pitching coach from 2006-2007 and then spent the next six seasons as the Dodgers minor league pitching coordinator.

The position became vacant when the Phillies fired previous pitching coach Chris Young after just one season. Unlike Young, Price and Rothschild both offer several years of experience as a major league pitching coach. The Phillies interest in them shows that, similar to their managerial hiring process, they may be prioritizing experience in this search.
