As the Philadelphia Phillies round out their Spring Training roster with veterans on minor-league deals, they will be losing one player who fits that description to a division opponent.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that Sean Rodríguez has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Miami Marlins for this upcoming season. Rodríguez, 34, signed the same type of deal with the Phillies last February.
After playing 12 games for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Rodríguez spent the rest of 2019 as a utility player for the Phillies. He appeared in 76 games as a Phillie, primarily as a third baseman but playing every position other than catcher. Rodríguez even made two scoreless pitching appearances in blowout losses. He hit four home runs with a .723 OPS last season.
He made headlines last August when he called Phillies fans “entitled” after a game for booing the team. The timing was a bit odd as Rodríguez hit a walk-off home run that very night. His statement led to – you guessed it – more booing from Phillies fans, leaving Rodríguez as quite possibly the only player to ever be booed by his home crowd the day after a game-winning home run.
Rodríguez will most likely be looking for a bench role with the Marlins, similar to the one he had in Philadelphia. This would be his 13th season in the majors if he can make the roster.
The Marlins will host the Phillies on Opening Day in Miami on March 26.
