Although the baseball season is currently on hiatus, the Philadelphia Phillies did reportedly make a move this weekend.
According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, the team has signed international prospect Yhoswar Garcia, a center fielder from Venezuela. Garcia and the Phillies were expected to reach a deal this past July, but that was delayed after some issues regarding the outfielder’s age. Garcia became eligible in March, and the two sides were able to make an agreement.
It is now known that Garcia was born in 2001 and is currently 18 years old. He is a young talented athlete who can run and play defense. Garcia is currently listed at 6-foot-1, 155 pounds, but certainly has time to fill out. He will most likely need to do so in order to reach his full potential as a hitter.
Since Garcia is only a teenager, it could be a while before he is able to advance toward the majors. Nonetheless, the Phillies have now added a quality prospect to their system that fans can follow as he develops.
