Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.
April 30, 2011- Phillies 2, Mets 1
If you have a good memory, you might remember that the last weekend of April nine years ago was dominated by the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. In Philly, that didn’t seem to matter much because Doc Halladay was scheduled to take the mound in front of a sold-out Citizens Bank Park against the hated New York Mets.
To get a sense of just how dominant Doc was that day, he didn’t throw a single ball until he faced José Reyes the second time around in the third inning. He narrowly missed a complete game in his last start against the San Diego Padres. This time, he was able to get the final out in the ninth, earning his fifth victory of the season and second complete game.
The offense almost squandered Halladay’s brilliant performance as they were held scoreless until the seventh thanks to Mets pitcher Jon Niese, who was also dealing. They finally came through with a John Mayberry solo home run and Plácido Polanco sacrifice fly.
