Phillies Nation Perfect Season: Hamels wins fourth straight in 2010 gem against Red Sox

May 21, 2010 – Phillies 5, Red Sox 1

Looking to get back to 11 games over .500, the first-place Phillies took the field against John Lackey and the Boston Red Sox during interleague play. If anything was going the Phillies’ way heading into the series against Boston was ace southpaw Cole Hamels. Philadelphia had won four straight Hamels starts with him earning wins in his last three outings. He had only allowed six earned runs over the previous 19 2/3 innings and kept things rolling against Boston.

In front of over 45,000 fans at Citizens Bank Park, Hamels put together another gem. After allowing the Red Sox to score in the first inning, Hamels scattered just two hits over the next six frames.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the Phillies finally got their offense going. Ryan Howard launched a solo shot to the opposite field to lead-off the inning. Jayson Werth followed with a double and two batters later, Shane Victorino plated Werth with a single to left to take the lead.

Hamels retired the side in order in the fifth and the Phils bats gave him some more support in the bottom half. With one out, Ryan Howard took a base on balls. Just one batter later, Jayson Werth slugged a two-run bomb into the second deck in left field to extend the Phils lead to 4-1. Howard would knock another run in during the sixth inning on an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Following Hamels’ seven innings of one-run ball (which included eight strikeouts), David Herndon tossed a scoreless eighth. Danys Baez started the ninth, but after giving up a single and walking a hitter, J.C. Romero came in to notch his third save of the season.

Phillies Notes: In just his fifth game back from the injured list, Jimmy Rollins left the game early due to a strained right calf muscle. Rollins had missed 29 games due to the same injury. He’d end up missing the next 26 games.
