Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular-season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.
May 28, 2014 – Phillies 6, Rockies 3
Just one day after leaving 10 men on base and going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, the Phillies turned things around thanks to a familiar face. This game had it all from pitching battles to hot bats on a windy night in South Philadelphia. Phillies and Rockies hitters would combine for 18 hits.
We pick things up in the top of the eighth, where after two scoreless frames from the Phillies bullpen, Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu got to Jake Diekman with a solo home run to left field to put the Rockies up 3-2.
However, Chase Utley came through once again for the Phillies in the ninth as he hit an RBI single to right field bringing in Tony Gwynn Jr. to tie the game 3-3.
With two on and two out, Ryan Howard sent fans home in a familiar feeling. On a 2-2 count, Howard crushed a 93 MPH fastball to deep left-center field for an opposite-field walk-off homerun:
It was Howard’s fifth career walk-off home run and his first since July 9, 2010 against the Cincinnati Reds. For the Phillies, it was the first time of the 2014 season that they won a game after trailing in the eighth inning.
