May 8, 1993- Phillies 2, Cardinals 1
The 1993 Philadelphia Phillies came into game two of a home weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals winning 10 of their last 13, good for a 4.5 game lead over the Montreal Expos for first place in the NL East.
Terry Mulholland took the mound for the Saturday night game at Veterans Stadium. He came into this game with a 2.60 ERA and the expectation that he can go deep and lead the team to victory. He did just that, striking out six over 10 innings in one of the best outings of his All-Star season.
The only problem was that the opposing pitcher, future Phillie Rheal Cormier, was equally as good. He allowed only one earned run over nine innings and kept the Phillies lineup off balance the entire night. His bullpen and defense, however, did him no favors.
Leading off the bottom of the tenth, Pete Incaviglia reached on a throwing error from another future Phillie, Todd Zeile. Milt Thompson headed to first to pinch-run for Incaviglia and a batter later, Thompson stole second. After a Mickey Morandini walk, Jim Eisenreich came in to pinch-hit for Mulholland. The Cardinals opted for a better matchup and brought in left-hander Rob Murphy. Jim Fregosi countered and replaced Eisenreich with Ricky Jordan. The move paid off as Jordan’s single to left field scored Thompson from second, ending the ball game.
