Phillies Nation Perfect Season: Tommy Greene throws complete-game shutout against the Marlins

Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.

May 18, 1993 – Phillies 6, Marlins 0

The early-season dominance of the starting rotation spearheaded the 1993 Phillies into pennant contenders. Tommy Greene, who was slotted behind Curt Schilling as the team’s No. 2 starter, came into this game leading the league in ERA. All he did was throw a six-hit shutout.

In front of President George H.W. Bush and his son Jeb, the Phillies devoured the Fish in just the second meeting between these two franchises. 1993 was the Florida Marlins’ first season of play after entering the league as an expansion team.

Mickey Morandini came up big both at the plate and on the field. His clutch one-out two-bagger in the seventh doubled the Phillies lead to 4-0. He also made one heck of a diving catch in the eighth, turning a double play off a ball that almost careened off the pitcher Greene:
