Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.
May 5, 2018- Phillies 3, Nationals 1
May 5, 2018 was an especially odd day. For the fans, both Stars Wars and Cinco De Mayo were celebrated around the ballpark. According to the broadcast, Nationals manager Dave Martinez hired a mariachi band to play in the clubhouse as his players were arriving. It was Anthony Rendon’s first game back from the injured list and the Nationals broke into song and dance to celebrate his return.
The celebration did not last long as Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run home run to center field in the first. Vince Velasquez did his job on the mound, allowing only one earned run over five innings. The Nationals’ best opportunity to get even came in the bottom of the ninth. Héctor Neris came in to close and struggled to throw strikes. He walked the leadoff hitter Trea Turner.
The next batter popped up to César Hernandez at second. Turner took off on the pitch and shortstop Pedro Florimón, who came into the game in the sixth inning, tricked Turner into thinking there was a throw over to second from the catcher. The Phillies doubled up Turner and after struggling a bit more with his command, Neris secured a save:
