Phillies announce 2020 roster pool

The Philadelphia Phillies announced their 2020 roster pool Sunday evening, which consists of 53 players:

In total, the Phillies roster pool currently consists of 31 pitchers, 10 infielders, nine outfielders and three catchers.

Righty Spencer Howard and third baseman Alec Bohm, the organization’s top two prospects, are in the 53-man pool. Service time considerations could keep one or both from being on the opening day roster, though both are expected to debut at some point in 2020.

Former All-Star Odubel Herrera, who missed much of the 2019 season after a domestic violence suspension, is not among the initial 53 players. Neither are former first-round picks Cornelius Randolph, Mickey Moniak or Bryson Stott.

It is important to note that the Phillies can still add internal players or free agents that may become available if released by other teams throughout the course of the 2020 season.

The Phillies cut veteran reliever Drew Storen and outfielder Matt Szczur, per Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
