Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular-season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.
June 10, 2009 – Phillies 5, Mets 4
Just over a month removed from leading the Philadelphia Phillies to their first World Series championship since 1980, ace Cole Hamels went on New York sports talk radio and called the Mets “choke artists.” Six months later, Hamels faced the Mets for the first time at Citi Field since his comment aired. He was showered with boos during his first plate appearance.
Hamels struggled in the outing, giving up 11 hits on two unearned and two earned runs. He didn’t give up a lot of hard contact but the Mets seemed to find the holes they needed to score three runs in the fourth inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Phillies sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs to tie the game at four. Chad Durbin, J.C. Romero and Chan Ho Park combined for three shutout innings to send to the game to the 10th.
Noted Mets-killer Chase Utley came up the plate with nobody on in the 11th. After hitting his second home run in as many days in the fourth inning to what is now known as “Utley’s corner”, Utley struck again. He floated another ball over the right-field corner off Bobby Parnell to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead.
