Phillies Nation Perfect Season: Domonic Brown walks off against Nationals

No game captures the drama, the highs and lows, and shows how quickly things can change in the game of baseball quite like this.

The Washington Nationals jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Anthony Rendon was brought in by Jason Werth, but the Phillies stalled the Nationals’ momentum when they ended the inning off a 6-4-3 double play. The Phillies answered through Ryan Howard, who nailed a 430-foot solo home run after fouling a ball off his shin in the second inning. Howard would leave the game in the bottom of the eighth because of his shin, but not before he would hit an RBI single to aid the Phillies’ offensive effort.

The Phillies took the lead in the bottom of the third when Michael Young hit a triple and Nationals pitcher Dan Haren walked Jimmy Rollins and Howard, leaving the bases loaded with one out. Delmon Young brought in Young and Rollins with a double to right field and gave the Phillies the 3-1.

The Nationals chipped away at the Phillies’ lead throughout the game. In the ninth inning, they trailed the Phillies 4-3 with two outs and no one on base. Chad Tracy stepped up to pinch-hit for the Nationals against Jonathon Papelbon — a pitcher Tracy had faced three times and who Tracy had not recorded a hit against. But, with two strikes already against him, Tracy silenced the Citizens Bank Park crowd by hitting a solo home run to tie the game.

The Nationals would not get to celebrate for long. In the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies hit line drive after line drive, starting with Ben Revere. After Revere, Rollins reached first on another line drive to center field and allowed Revere to reach third. With two outs and two runners on base, Domonic Brown stepped up to the plate. Brown nailed another line drive to center field, a walk-off RBI single that brought in Revere.

The fans and bench erupted. The first player out to celebrate with Brown? Papelbon.
