June 12, 2018 – Phillies 5, Rockies 4
A combination of the offensive work by Scott Kingery and Aaron Nola’s stellar pitching led the Phillies to a 5-4 win against the Colorado Rockies on this day in 2018.
Kingery came out swinging. In the top of the first, after Rockies pitcher Jon Gray had walked Rhys Hoskins and Carlos Santana, Kingery hit a three-run home run to give the Phillies the early lead. Then, in the bottom of the third, Kingery stepped up to bat with bases loaded and hit a sacrifice fly. He brought in four of the Phillies five runs in the game.
The final run the Phillies scored came in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to smart baserunning from Odubel Herrera. Herrera reached first after a dropped third strike, then stole second. Jesmeul Valentin stepped in to pinch hit and brought Herrera the rest of the way home with a line drive to center field.
Nola held the Rockies to four hits and one run. The run came in the top of the seventh inning. Nola racked up 10 strikeouts over the course of the game and allowed no walks. He had three 1-2-3 innings, and, in the top of the sixth, only needed 13 pitches to end the inning. When he was being replaced by Edubray Ramos in the seventh inning, boos rang down from the crowd. They did not want to stop watching Nola work.
All the work throughout the game saved the Phillies from the Rockies’ rally in the top of the ninth. Luis Garcia was the pitcher at the beginning of the inning but was soon replaced after allowing four consecutive singles and one run. Seranthony Dominguez came in and gave up two more runs, one off a single and the other off of a sacrifice fly, but ended the game by striking out Nolan Arenando after he checked his swing a little too late. Nola was given the win; Dominguez was given the save.
