Phillies Nation Perfect Season: Phillies walk-off against Reds for the second night in a row

Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.

June 3, 2015 – Phillies 5, Reds 4

The Phillies were coming into the game after breaking a seven-game losing streak with a walk-off 5-4 win against the Cincinnati Reds the night before. Who would have thought the Phillies were going to do the same thing two nights in a row?

Throughout the game, the Phillies were kept off the bases by Reds pitcher Mike Leake, who had a no-hitter through 6- 2/3 innings. Until the ninth inning, only three Phillies had reached base safely. Meanwhile, the Reds had racked up runs. Cole Hamels allowed a two-run RBI single by Brandon Phillips in the top of the fourth and, in the ninth inning, Joey Votto hit a two-run home run to put the Phillies at a four-run deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth.

It was not until Leake was pulled and Aroldis Chapman took the mound that the Phillies made moves on offense. With runners on first and third, Chase Utley hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run of the night. He then walked Ryan Howard, which put the tying run at-bat. Franco stepped up and, for the second night in a row, hit the game-tying home run. The Phillies could not win the game in the ninth, and the game went into extra innings tied 4-4.

The Phillies were in scoring position with a lead-off double by Cody Asche in the bottom of the eleventh. Freddy Galvis stepped up to the plate to try and bring Asche in. Galvis did not get a clean hit on the ball, and it bounced to first baseman Votto. Mattheus ran to first to get the force out, but, as Votto tossed him the ball, Mattheus tipped it with the top of his glove and sent it behind him. Asche, who was rounding third, took advantage of the error and ran the rest of the way home. The Phillies had yet another walk-off win against the Reds.
