Phillies pick Casey Martin in third round of MLB draft

With the 87th pick in the 2020 MLB draft, the Phillies select Casey Martin, a shortstop out of the University of Arkansas. This comes one night after they drafted high school pitcher Mick Abel in the first round of the draft.

Martin, who stands at 5-foot-11, is a right-handed hitter and has shown some pop in his time at Arkansas. The 21-year-old is solid value in the middle of the third round, as he was seen by some, including The Athletic‘s Keith Law, as a top-50 prospect in this year’s draft.

In his three years at Arkansas, Martin slashed .310/.389/.542 and hit 30 home runs in 148 games. He has struggled with some plate discipline, striking out in nearly 28% of his at-bats.

Martin is seen as a player who could stick at shortstop or play above average defense elsewhere on the diamond. This pick comes just a year after the Phillies drafted UNLV shortstop Bryson Stott in the first round of the 2019 draft.
