Former Phillies pitcher Tyson Brummett dies in a plane crash

Former Phillies pitcher Tyson Brummett died in a small plane crash in Utah on Friday morning, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Brummett, 35, piloted the plane that crashed near Box Elder Peak. Three other passengers were on board, including Alex Ruegner, 35 and Alex’s aunt and uncle Elaine Blackhurst, 60, and Douglas Blackhurst, 62. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. A witness said the plane spiraled out of his view and he heard an impact just moments later.

Brummett made one appearance with the Phillies in 2012. He allowed two hits and struck out two while getting the final two outs in relief of Jonathan Papelbon in a game against the Washington Nationals in D.C.

He spent the majority of his time in professional baseball within the Phillies minor-league system, appearing in 42 games for Lehigh Valley. The Phillies drafted Brummett in the seventh round out of UCLA in the 2007 MLB draft.
