Just over 1% of MLB players, staff test positive for COVID-19
As part of getting ready for the start of the 2020 MLB season in the midst of a global pandemic, the league recently tested players and staff as a gauge to see how much of the league would test positive.
According to a press release from Major League Baseball, 38 of 3,185 players and staff tested were positive for COVID-19. This includes positive tests on 19 teams throughout the league, with 31 players and seven staff members testing positive.
One of these teams is known to be the Phillies, who placed Scott Kingery, Tommy Hunter, Ranger Suarez and Hector Neris on the COVID-19 related injured list earlier this week.
While any players testing positive for the virus is obviously not ideal, the portion of players and staff to test positive was not as high as some had thought. It was well under that of the NBA, which has seen 25 of 351 players and 10 of 884 staff members tested since last week test positive.
This situation is ongoing, however, as so far it has become clear that two teams, the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics, were not included in the report and are still awaiting for their test results.
These testing results come with just three weeks remaining until Opening Day, which is currently set for July 24.
