Phillies announce that Seranthony Dominguez had successful Tommy John surgery

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez had successful Tommy John surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews Thursday, the club announced.

The 25-year-old righty will miss the 2020 season as he recovers from the procedure, and it remains entirely possible that he’ll miss most or all of the 2021 season as well.

Dominguez last pitched in a regular season game for the Phillies on June 5, 2019 in San Diego, an appearance he left with a UCL injury in his right elbow. Though it was repeatedly determined during the 2019 season that the hard-throwing righty didn’t need Tommy John surgery, he re-injured the UCL in his first spring training appearance in 2019 after a seemingly successful offseason of rehab.

In 2018, Dominguez burst onto the scene for the Phillies, posting a 2.95 ERA in 53 games in his rookie season. However, he posted a 4.01 ERA in 27 games in 2019 before injuring his UCL. Once seen as a potential stalwart in the Phillies bullpen, it now may be until late 2021 or early 2022 that Dominguez is able to pitch in a major league game.

Through the first three games of the Phillies 2020 season, it appeared that their middle relief had the chance to border on disaster. That may change, but it’s hard to have much certainty about what the bullpen will look like moving forward. Hector Neris is under contract through the 2021 season, but Jose Alvarez, the team’s other lone reliable relief option a season ago, can become a free agent following the 2020 season.
