Phillies release Logan Forsythe, more roster decisions to come later today

July 18 is an important day on the Phillies calendar.

General manager Matt Klentak is tasked with making decisions on multiple non-roster invitees. The team has to inform veterans such as Neil Walker, Logan Forsythe and Francisco Liriano whether or not they will make the Opening-Day roster today. Walker, Forsythe and Liriano can also be offered a retention bonus to stay behind and work at the Phillies alternative training site in Lehigh Valley if they are not offered a roster spot.

If the player does not accept the retention bonus, any of the three players can opt-out of their minor-league contact. Josh Harrison, Ronald Torreyes, Anthony Swarzak, Blake Parker and Phil Gosselin can also opt-out of their deals today, but are not eligible for the retention money. The Phillies can also release any of these players.

The Phillies have made a decision on one of their camp veterans. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Phillies have released Forsythe.

Forsythe, 33, signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies in February. A nine-year major-league veteran, Forsythe played for the Texas Rangers as a utility infielder in 2019 where he slashed .227/.325/.353 in 101 games played. He would have served in a similar capacity with the Phillies if he had made the team.
