Eflin, Phillies swept in doubleheader by Marlins

FINAL: Marlins 8, Phillies 1

Sunday was about as brutal of a day in Philadelphia sports as you could imagine.

The Phillies had to place Spencer Howard on the 10-day injured list with shoulder stiffness, and were without J.T. Realmuto and Rhys Hoskins for both games of their doubleheader with the Miami Marlins.

Sandwiched around the Eagles blowing a 17-0 lead in their first game of the season were two Phillies losses. In Game 1 of the doubleheader, former Phillies farmhand Sixto Sánchez tossed a complete game against the team that traded him as part of a package for the aforementioned Realmuto in February of 2019. Things didn’t go much better in Game 2, as the Phillies got themselves in an early hole, one they were unable to climb out of.

Top Plays

  • The Marlins wasted no time in getting after Zach Eflin in Game 2 of the doubleheader, putting three runs on the board courtesy of RBI singles by Jesus Aguilar, Matt Joyce and Brian Anderson.
  • Alec Bohm got a run back in the top of the second inning, as he launched a 436-foot home run over the center field wall:
  • Aguilar continued to torture the Phillies in the home half of the third inning, plating Starling Marte with an RBI double:
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Marlins put the game out of reach. After a two-run double by Miguel Rojas, Marlins catcher Chad Wallach hit a 413-foot home run, extending the lead to 8-1:

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

  • At a time where the Phillies really needed a strong performance from Zach Eflin, he lasted just four plus innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. Some of his peripherals suggest that he’s been better, but Eflin has a 5.01 ERA after eight starts. With uncertainty about the statuses of Zack Wheeler and Spencer Howard, that lack of reliability looms large.
  • In his Major League Debut, Braxton Garrett went five innings, limiting the Phillies to three hits and one run, while striking out six. While the Phillies have struggled to find any consistency in their rotation beyond Wheeler and Aaron Nola, the Marlins seem to have built an impressive pipeline of young pitching.
