Nola throws first complete game in blowout win

After the Phillies made a statement, winning nine of 10, they’ve somewhat fallen back to earth, losing four of their next six. They looked to be getting back on track in their first of seven against the Marlins in a five-day span, but the Phillies bullpen couldn’t hold a 6-3 lead.

Needless to say, they needed to bounce back in convincing fashion and that is what they did. Behind an offensive barrage combined with a nearly un-hittable Aaron Nola, the Phils got back into the win column with an 11-0 victory in game one of Friday’s doubleheader.

Top Plays

  • Marlins starter Trevor Rogers struck out three and Phillies Aaron Nola struck out two in the first inning. Rogers got two more punchouts in the second while Nola struck out the side. Then things started getting good for the Phils on the offensive end.
  • Adam Haseley hit a one-out double to center and scored on an Andrew McCutchen two-run homer to make it a 2-0 Phillies lead in the third.
  • Rhys Hoskins hit a single and two batters later, J.T. Realmuto reached on a hit-by-pitch. Jean Segura made the Marlins pay for hitting their former backstop, lacing a two-run double to left to make it a 4-0 game.
  • The Phillies added on more in the fourth. After Phil Gosselin reached on a throwing error, Alec Bohm singled, moving Gosselin to third. Adam Haseley plated Gosselin with a single to left, extending the lead to five. Andrew McCutchen tallied his third RBI of the day with a run-scoring single.
  • With both McCutchen and Haseley on base and still no outs, Rhys Hoskins golfed a three-run home run to left on a ball way below the strike zone, making it a 9-0 Phillies lead.
  • In the fifth, Didi Gregorious led things off with a single to left. Two batters later, Alec Bohm plated Didi with a double, putting the Phillies in double digits — 10-0.
  • Adam Haseley followed with a double of his own, scoring Bohm, to make it an 11-0 Phillies lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Aaron Nola allowed a hit and also hit a batter, but didn’t allow a run scoring, which helped earn him the complete-game shutout win, the first of his career.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

Aaron Nola: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K, 0 HR, 106 pitches

Nola’s last start was not his best, allowing six runs (three earned) in a 14-1 loss to the Mets. Like the Phillies as a team in game 1, Nola rebounded in a big way from his previous outing. The Phillies ace notched his second-straight game with 10 strikeouts and scattered just three hits across seven scoreless. Nola has held opposing teams to three hits or less in five of his nine starts this season. Although it was only a seven-inning game, it was a big one for Nola’s career. It was the first complete-game shutout for the right-hander in his five plus years in the big leagues. Nola’s ERA is down to 2.40 after his seven-inning gem.

Trevor Rogers: 3 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 71 pitches

Through the first two innings, it looked like we were going to have a nice, old fashioned pitcher’s duel in game one of the doubleheader. Unfortunately for Rogers, things unwound for him after just two innings. The 22-year-old southpaw struck out five batters through the first two innings before allowing four runs in the third and five in the fifth. Coming into today’s game Rogers had allowed just five total runs in his three previous games, spanning 15 innings.

Phillies Nuggets Player of the Game: Adam Haseley

Coming into the game, Haseley was 0-4 this season against lefties. He hit .212 against them last season. Today, however, was a different story. Haseley had two hits off lefty starter Trevor Rogers and finished the game 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.
