Matt Klentak could return for a sixth season as general manager.
A team source told the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Bob Brookover that he does not think the Phillies will fire Klentak.
Additionally, NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury said in a recent article “Klentak’s fate is in the hands of managing partner John Middleton.” Per Salisbury, it’s unclear at this point whether or not Klentak will return next season.
That’s important to keep in mind. Team President Andy MacPhail was the one who hired Klentak and it seems as though the decision to fire him has been taken out of his hands. It’s eerily similar to how Gabe Kapler’s dismissal as manager last season played out.
Klentak was hired in Oct. 2015 to take over as general manager for Rubén Amaro Jr. With Klentak at the helm, the Phillies have gone 326-382 and have yet to snap their nine-year postseason drought.
With one of the highest payrolls in baseball, the Phillies failed to make the 16-team postseason. That should be cause for concern for an ownership group and front office that insists they are in win-now mode.
When asked about his future in a recent Zoom meeting with reporters, Klentak steered away from the line of questioning.
“After the season is over, we can look back and go through the post-moretem,” Klentak said on Sept. 21
Stay tuned. The post-mortem should be coming soon.
