The latest on Matt Klentak’s job status

Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton is still mulling over Matt Klentak’s future in the organization.

He might be leaning more towards dismissing Klentak as opposed to retaining him.

A source told Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer Tuesday night “There are a bunch of nervous employees in Philly, and it sounds like it is imminent that a GM change will be made.” The source also mentions that Middleton “wrestles with some of the simplest decisions.”

On Monday, Brookover reported that a source believed the Phillies would not fire Klentak.

It appears Middleton is employing a similar deliberate approach that he took when evaluating Gabe Kapler’s job status last October. The clock is ticking, however. The team has plenty of holes to fill in what should be a hectic office season and the front office personnel should be settled well before free agency begins.

The source’s mentioning of nervous employees is in reference to impending layoffs within the organization. First reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies are offering buyouts to a number of full-time employees that are not in baseball operations.

Middleton could also be weighing the financial ramifications of firing Matt Klentak and his assistants. Klentak has two years left on his contract and is owed six million dollars.
