Phillies bullpen coach Jim Gott will not return in 2021, multiple sources tell NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury. His contract expired at the end of the 2020 season.
Gott, 61, was hired as bullpen coach on November 17, 2017. Prior to that, he spent eight years as a minor-league pitching coordinator for the Los Angeles Angels. He played parts of 14 seasons in the major leagues primarily as a reliever from 1982 to 1994 with the Blue Jays, Giants, Pirates and Dodgers, going 56-74 with a 3.87 ERA in 544 career games.
This marks the second vacancy the Phillies have to fill this offseason on their coaching staff. Earlier this offseason, the Phillies announced that pitching coach Bryan Price was retiring from coaching full-time.
The Phillies bullpen combined for a 7.06 ERA, by far the worst in MLB and second only to the 1930 Phillies as the worst in MLB history. It’s unfair, however, to pin the result solely on Gott as he is just one of the many pitching instructors the Phillies carry.
