When Charlie Morton takes the mound against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the World Series Friday night, he won’t be the only former Philadelphia Phillie vying for a championship ring.
The Tampa Bay Rays starter is one of several former Phillies players with the opportunity to win a ring in this World Series.
Morton is joined by fellow Rays pitcher Aaron Loup as the only players on either World Series roster to have previously played for the Phillies. Morton made four starts for the team in 2016 before tearing his hamstring. The left-handed Loup, who retired three consecutive batters as the Rays evened the series in Game 2, was acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline in 2018. He had a 4.50 ERA in nine appearances down the stretch that season.
Former Phillies reliever Édgar García is not included on Tampa Bay’s World Series roster, but could still win a ring with the Rays if they can defeat the Dodgers. Teams will generally issue rings to all players who played for them at some point in the championship season. García made four appearances for the Rays this season, after posting a 5.77 ERA in 37 outings as a rookie in Philadelphia last year.
While not technically a former Phillie, Rays reliever John Curtiss spent time in 2019 in the Phillies organization at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He had an ERA of 1.80 in 25 innings this season with Tampa Bay.
Paul Hoover, who hit a walk-off single on the last day of the 2009 regular season for the Phillies, is the major-league field coordinator for Tampa Bay. The former catcher played 12 games for the Phillies between 2009 and 2010. He traveled with the Phillies during the 2009 postseason run that resulted in a World Series loss to the New York Yankees.
While no Dodgers players or coaches played for the Phillies, Raúl Ibañez is a special assistant to the general manager in Los Angeles. He played for the Phillies from 2009-2011, and was an All-Star in that NL championship season.
Morton is the only one of these former Phillies who already has a World Series ring. He earned one in 2017 with the Houston Astros, closing out the seventh game against the Dodgers.
