Which Phillies would have been All-Stars in 2020?

Although the 2020 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was canceled, several Philadelphia Phillies players had All-Star-worthy seasons.

The All-Star Game generally takes place midseason, but because the major-league season only lasted 60 games this year, it would have made much more sense to put the teams together following the season.

Catcher J.T. Realmuto would have been as close to a sure thing as possible if the league hosted an All-Star Game. He led all NL catchers in fWAR at 1.7 in just 47 games. The 29-year-old was also the best hitter of any qualified catcher, posting an OPS of .840. Realmuto likely would have started the All-Star Game, and made the team for the third consecutive year.

Two Phillies pitchers would have been probable All-Stars as well. Right-handed starters Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler finished ninth and 10th in fWAR among NL pitchers in 2020, both finishing at 2.0. Nola and Wheeler finished with ERAs of 3.28 and 2.92 respectively, and combined to be one of the best starting pitching duos in the league. Nola previously pitched in the All-Star Game in 2018, while Wheeler has never been named an All-Star.

Right fielder Bryce Harper would’ve had an interesting case for an All-Star spot. His .962 OPS was sixth-best among qualified NL outfielders, and would have put him in a position to contend for a reserve position on the team. Harper has been an All-Star six times so far in his career.

Perhaps rookie Alec Bohm could have had an outside chance to make the team as well. In only 44 games, the 2018 first-round pick had the fourth-highest fWAR for NL third basemen with 1.2. Bohm posted an OPS of .881, and should be able to compete for All-Star selections in the future.

Despite missing the playoffs, the Phillies did get impressive individual performances from a good amount of players. The team would have probably had at least three representatives at the All-Star Game for the first time since Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon and Carlos Ruiz all made it in 2012. As is, the Phillies haven’t had multiple All-Star representatives since 2013, when Domonic Brown and Cliff Lee played in the game at Citi Field.
