32 Phillies clues featured on Jeopardy! over the years

Legendary Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek passed away early Sunday morning at the age of 80.

His passing is devastating to all those who grew up watching him. As baseball fans who aren’t trivia savvy, we were excited when a category that catered to our brains full of useless knowledge came up on the board. It was even more exciting when the answer to the clue was “Who is Mike Schmidt.”

In honor of Trebek’s legacy, here is a brief collection of Phillies clues featured on Jeopardy! courtesy of the J! Archive. You should be able to get all of them right.

May 29, 1990: SPORTS NICKNAMES $500: In 1950, this team known as the “Whiz Kids” won the N.L. pennant but lost the World Series to the Yankees.
May 16, 1994: LEFTOVERS $400: This National League baseball team features the Liberty Bell on its logo.
Jan. 24, 1996: SPORTS ’95 $1000: Mike Schmidt of this team was the only player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.
Nov. 26, 1996: HOME RUN SLUGGERS $500: This former Phillies third baseman led the National League in home runs a record eight times.

June 27, 2000: HOME BALLPARKS $400: Veterans Stadium.
April 25, 2001: THE KEYSTONE STATE $400: This baseball team has the oldest team name in the National League.
June 22, 2001: ANIMALS OF BASEBALL $100: You wouldn’t let the Phillies’ Greg Luzinski, nicknamed this, into your China shop.
Jan 16. 2002: THE NATIONAL PASTIME $800: A pitch that Steve Carlton mastered, or a player taking the low road to a base.

Feb. 12, 2004: SPORTS MASCOTS $1000: Since 1978 the city of Brotherly Love has been the home of this green, nozzle-beaked behemoth.
Dec. 22, 2006: BASEBALL HALL OF FAMERS $2000: Nickname shared by Hall of Fame pitchers Steve Carlton & Robert Grove.
June 4, 2007: BASEBALL: THE 1960s $2,000: On June 21, 1964, this Phillies pitcher, now a U.S. Senator from Kentucky, hurled a perfect game.
Feb. 5, 2009: THE “FIRST” STATE $400: Ryan Howard’s day job with the Phillies.

Jan. 3, 2011: 21st CENTURY ATHLETES $1000: He hit 58 homers for the Phillies in 2006 and has the same name as the temp-turned-boss-turned-temp on “The Office.”
April 19, 2011: 25-GAME WINNERS $1000: In 1972 Steve Carlton was a 27-game winner for this team that won 59 the whole season.
Sept. 27, 2011: MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL LOGOS $600: Formerly, the team’s name in red across an outline of the Liberty Bell.
Jan. 27, 2012: LAST IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE $2000: In 1958, pitcher Robin Roberts won 17 games (yay), but this Pennsylvania team of his won only 52 more (not so yay).
April 9, 2012: I’M GONNA HURL $400: In 2010, Roy Halladay of this team threw two no-hitters — one in the regular season and one in the postseason.

April 13, 2012: THE “KID” STAYS IN THE CATEGORY $1600: This term for brainiac youths was applied to a youthful Phillies team of yore.
Feb. 19, 2012: WHO’S ON FIRST? $800: Phillies, 2004-present.
May 31, 2013: WORLD SERIES MVPs BY POSITION $800: Mike Schmidt (1980) & Pablo Sandoval (2012).
March 19, 2014: TEAM PLAYERS $600: Robin Roberts, Chase Utley, Steve Carlton.
April 2, 2015: TEAM AKAs $800: In 1950 this youthful MLB team was “The Whiz Kids”; in 1983, the not-so-youthful “Wheeze Kids.”

May 23, 2016: THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO “HM” $400: Germany’s Helmut, or the Phillies’ Mike, who wore a helmet.
Nov 19, 2018: VEGGIE IDIOMS $2000: Bryce Harper says Mickey Mantle was “a typical” this-fed “kid from Oklahoma.”

Nov. 21, 2018: WACKY WEDNESDAY $600: Brotherly love indeed! A foul hit by Richie Ashburn of this team broke a lady’s nose; as she got carted out a 2nd broke her leg.
April 1, 2019: TV FUNNY BUSINESS $200: On this sitcom, Mac is a big fan of Chase Utley of the Phillies and wrote a special letter to him.
Nov. 15, 2019: JIM CLASS $400: On Father’s Day in 1964, Jim Bunning (father of 9), tossed one of these for the Phillies; nobody reached base!

Nov 29, 2019: BEFORE & AFTER $800: If they used a well-known brand of kosher hot dogs instead of bats, the Dodgers and Phillies would be in this baseball group.
March 27, 2020: AUTHOR FILL-INS $2000: Bryce ___ ___ Iacocca.
Oct. 8, 2020: BEER/ME! $600: A “Streetcar” character came to life when a vendor at Phillies games shouted this first name, trying to sell a Belgian beer.
