In need of a roster spot, Phillies trade Cole Irvin
In 2018, Cole Irvin won the International League’s Most Valuable Pitcher Award with a 2.57 ERA in 161 1/3 innings. On Saturday, Cole Irvin was traded to the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations.
The Phillies needed to open two spots on the 40-man roster after reportedly agreeing to deals with left-handed pitcher Matt Moore and shortstop Didi Gregorius. It’s likely Moore will replace Irvin, so a corresponding move for Gregorius is needed.
Irvin, 26, struggled in a limited number of appearances with the Phillies. Over 2019 and 2020, the former fifth-round draft pick threw 45 1/3 innings, posting a 6.75 ERA. He was a part of the historically bad 2020 Phillies bullpen that featured the worst bullpen ERA since integration in 1947. He debuted against the Kansas City Royals on Mother’s Day 2019 and impressed, throwing seven innings of one-run ball in a Phillies win.
While Irvin struggled in MLB, he had shown promise pitching in the Phillies minor league system. Irvin holds the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs franchise record for wins in a single season.
Irvin had a 3.07 ERA in 72 games started throughout all levels of the minor leagues. He was selected to the Florida State League and Triple-A All-Star games in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
