More details on J.T. Realmuto’s new contract
If you’ve missed the news, the Phillies have reportedly signed star catcher J.T Realmuto to a five-year/$115.5 million dollar deal.
Details on Realmuto’s new contract have been reported from multiple sources, including NBC Sports Philadelphia, The Athletic, The Associated Press and USA Today. Here are a few that we know of.
In 2020, J.T. Realmuto will earn $20 million, with $10 million deferred. The Phillies will pay $5 million to Realmuto in 2026 and 2027. From 2022-2025, Realmuto will earn $23.875 million per year. His average annual value is $23.1 million, which narrowly breaks the previous mark for catchers ($23 million by Joe Mauer).
The deal does not include any signing bonuses, opt-outs, no-trade clauses, incentives or options. If he is traded, the Phillies will pay Realmuto an additional $1 million. Realmuto will earn his 10-5-rights with the Phillies near the end of the 2024 season, meaning he is able to reject any trade offer for him if he remains on the team by that point.
The Phillies reportedly offered Realmuto $107.5 million over five-years two weeks ago before upping the offer prior to last weekend.
