Phillies have been in contact Freddy Galvis, per report

The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be making moves towards addressing their need at shortstop.

Already this week, we’ve heard from Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia that the Phillies remain “engaged” with Didi Gregorius, and Jim Bowden of The Athletic added that they’ve shown interest in former American League MVP finalist Marcus Semien.

In addition to those two options, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer hears that the Phillies have touched base with an old friend: Freddy Galvis.

Galvis, now 31, spent the first six seasons of his major league career with the Phillies. Since then, he’s spent time with the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds. Galvis slashed .220/.308/.404 with seven home runs, 16 RBIs and a .712 OPS in 47 games for the Reds this past season. Between 2016 and 2019, Galvis had 14 defensive runs saved, but regressed to -1 in 2020.

There’s no indication that the Phillies prefer Galvis to either Gregorius or Semien, there wouldn’t be much logic in that. However, this is the latest indication that if Gregorius doesn’t return, the Phillies don’t feel comfortable moving forward with Scott Kingery and Jean Segura as their primary middle infielders, especially since Kingery may be needed in center field
