The Phillies continue to add bullpen help under Dave Dombrowski, as they have signed right-handed reliever Archie Bradley to a one-year, $6 million contract, according to MLB.com‘s Mark Feinsand. Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.Ca broke the news that Bradley was signing with the Phillies initially.
Bradley, 28, pitched to a 2.95 ERA across 16 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinatti Reds in 2020. Following the season, the Reds non-tendered Bradley, who was set to receive roughly $4-$5 million in arbitration.
After struggling initially as a starting pitcher, Bradley broke out as a reliever in 2017 when he pitched to a 1.73 ERA in 63 games. During his career out of the bullpen, Bradley has a 2.95 ERA and 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
Bradley is the second major bullpen addition the Phillies have made this offseason after adding Jose Alvarado in a trade last month. The team had a historically-bad bullpen in 2020 that sunk its playoff chances, and adding relief help was one of the biggest priorities entering this offseason.
This is the Phillies first major-league signing under new president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Expect more to come over the coming weeks and months as the team continues to get its roster set for the 2021 season.
