There were many uncertainties surrounding the Phillies offseason in the beginning of October. One thing, however, was quite clear: They were not bringing back Brandon Workman.
The former Phillies closer has agreed to a guaranteed deal with the Chicago Cubs, according to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic. He could triple the value of the contract if all incentives are met.
Workman, along with then Red Sox teammate Heath Hembree, was acquired by the Phillies on Aug. 21 in exchange for right-handed pitchers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold. Both Workman and Hembree’s tenures in Philadelphia were nightmares for both sides. Hembree has since signed a minor-league deal with Cleveland.
In 14 appearances with the Phillies, Workman gave up four home runs and 10 earned runs over 13 innings. He was tapped as the team’s closer as soon as he arrived in Philly and like most Phillies relievers in 2020, never seemed to settle in to his role.
The Cubs are surely hoping Workman rebounds and returns closer to his 2019 form. He went 10-1 with a 1.88 ERA for Boston in what will be his career year.
