Major League Baseball hires former Phillie Raúl Ibañez
Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Raúl Ibañez is joining Major League Baseball as a new senior vice president of on-field operations, it was announced Monday.
Ibañez, as noted by Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors, will “focus on issues pertaining to rules, equipment and on-field technology.”
Since retiring after the 2014 season, Ibañez has flirted with the idea of managing, but never actually returned to the dugout. However, he’s worked as a studio analyst with both FS1 and ESPN, and prior to this role, had been a special assistant to the general manager with the Los Angeles Dodgers. So clearly, Ibañez has stayed around the game and remained extremely coveted in the sport.
Though 11 of Ibañez’s 19 major league seasons came with the Seattle Mariners, he’s arguably most remembered for his three seasons in Philadelphia.
After winning the 2008 World Series, the Phillies allowed Pat Burrell to leave in free agency, signing Ibañez to a three-year/$31.5 million deal in free agency. Ibañez made his lone All-Star appearance in 2009, smacking a career-high 34 home runs and helping the Phillies return to the World Series. In three seasons in red pinstripes, Ibañez slashed .264/.329/.469 with 70 home runs and 260 RBIs.
