If you happened to be listening to SportsRadio 94 WIP in between Game 1 and Game 2 of the Philadelphia Phillies-New York Mets doubleheader Tuesday, you heard Gregg Murphy, who has a new role during Phillies games.
The St. Joseph’s graduate will be doing some freelance work during Phillies radio broadcasts, serving as the pre and post-game host on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he told Phillies Nation Tuesday night. Jim Jackson had previously occupied this role for all games when it didn’t otherwise conflict with the Flyers, but the Phillies, citing financial concerns, let Jackson go after the 2020 season.
Murphy, who spent nearly two decades at NBC Sports Philadelphia, was laid off at the conclusion of the 2020 season, as his role (like all sideline roles throughout the company) was eliminated. Murphy had been a pretty universally liked on-field reporter during Phillies telecasts from 2012-2020. He would also fill in as the play-by-play announcer on weekends where Tom McCarthy was calling an NFL game.
In addition to his role on radio, Murphy recently started a podcast called “Glove Stories With Murph,” which has already featured interviews with Mike Schmidt, Charlie Manuel, Matt Breen, Mickey Morandini, Larry Bowa and Ben Davis. Accomplished former SportsRadio 94 WIP marketing director Cindy Webster is serving as the director of marketing and guest relations for what will surely become a regular listen for Phillies fans.
