The Philadelphia Phillies announced Wednesday that they have recalled former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak.
Moniak will take Adam Haseley’s spot on the 26-man roster. The Phillies placed Haseley on the restricted list this afternoon, with the team saying that the former first-round pick “has left the team for personal reasons for an undetermined amount of time.”
Manager Joe Girardi declined to get into any specifics of what has caused Haseley to leave the team, other than saying he found out this morning, spoke with him on the phone and that “we all agreed this was the best and we’ll move forward.” There is no timetable on when Haseley may return to the team.
Both Haseley and Roman Quinn had gotten off to cold starts in the 2021 season, but just last night, Girardi said that the Phillies didn’t believe that any of the alternatives they had at the satellite squad in Lehigh Valley were ready.
Girardi did say last month that the Phillies wanted Moniak to play every day when he returned to the majors. Certainly, they probably didn’t envision him returning this quickly, but given that Quinn is probably best-geared to be a bench player, we may see an extended look at Moniak in center field. Quinn will start this evening for the Phillies, but based on what Girardi said Wednesday, there appears to be a real chance that Moniak starts against right-handers moving forward, and perhaps more.
