Aaron Nola has rebounded from his worst career start in spectacular fashion. After a hit batsman and a double to begin the game, Nola struck out 10 consecutive Mets hitters. His eighth punchout broke a Phillies record previously held by Steve Carlton, Curt Schilling and Jerad Eickhoff, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
His 10th strikeout tied Tom Seaver’s 51-year MLB record for most consecutive strikeouts in a game. Four of those Ks were on his curveball, which looked like a virtually unhittable pitch all game. It would have been painful for Mets fans to see a Phillies pitcher break Tom Terrific’s record in their home stadium.
Nola was a strike away from breaking the record, but Pete Alonso stayed with a 1-2 sinker and drove it down the right-field line for a double.
Not only that, Nola came through when the rest of the Phillies lineup faltered. His RBI double in the fifth was his second hit of the day and is so far the game’s only run. Nola also tied his career high in strikeouts (12) for the fourth time in his career.
No matter what the final score of today’s game is, Nola’s showing in this outing will go down as one of the best individual performances in Phillies history.
