Nola gets back on track with win against Yankees

Final Score: Phillies 7, Yankees 0

Three straight walk-off wins are great, but the Phillies needed to establish even more momentum before heading off for a week of road games against two of the best teams in Major League Baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. The Yankees lineup was missing both Aaron Judge (back spasms) and Giancarlo Stanton (can’t play the outfield) and Aaron Nola took advantage of it.

For the 20th time in his career, Nola struck out at least nine batters while walking no more than one hitter. Joe Girardi’s decision to pull Nola after 7 2/3 innings and 103 pitches was not well received by the more than 38,000 fans in attendance. Connor Brogdon and Enyel De Los Santos combined to throw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

The Phillies offense combined for 12 hits through the first six innings. Odúbel Herrera, Jean Segura, J.T. Realmuto and Andrew McCutchen all had multi-hit games. Sunday marks the first time since 2003 the Phillies have won back-to-back games while scoring at least seven runs without hitting a home run in both games.

With a Mets loss against the Padres, the Phillies are now three games out of first place in the NL East. They are over .500 for the first time since May 19.

Top Plays

The Phillies played small ball again in the first inning. J.T. Realmuto brought home Herrera from third with an infield hit. They opened up the inning with three consecutive singles and probably should have had another if it wasn’t for a fantastic diving stop up the middle from Gleyber Torres. The Yankees were able to turn a rare 6-4-5 double play to squander a potential Phillies rally.

A leadoff double from McCutchen sparked a three-run inning for the Phils offense. Herrera picked up an RBI on a double. Last night’s hero Segura plated two on a single. He later advanced to third on a pickoff miscue. D.J. LeMahieu was charged with an error.

The Phillies were a home run away from a cycle in the fifth. They scored three runs thanks to a triple from Segura, a couple of singles from Bryce Harper and Realmuto and McCutchen’s second double of the game. Domingo Germán was pulled after 4 1/3 innings.
Rougned Odor was one of only two Yankee hitters to reach scoring position. On a ball hit to the left side of the infield, the former Texas Ranger decided to bolt for second base. Ronald Torreyes caught him in a rundown.

Domingo Germán: 4 1/3 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 82 pitches

The Yankees starting rotation came into the day with the seventh-best ERA in baseball. Maybe the Phillies were lucky to see Jameson Tallion and Germán in a two-game set, but they also have multiple hitters up and down the order that are seeing the ball extremely well. Both Tallion and Germán combined to give up 11 earned runs over two games.

Aaron Nola: 7 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO, 103 pitches

It’s crazy to think that Nola faced the Yankees for the first time in his career in 2020. In his first start, Nola threw six innings of one-run ball against New York in a seven-inning doubleheader. On Sunday, Nola needed to get right. He threw strikes, got Yankee hitters to bite early on and struck out nine while managing his pitch count. It was his best outing since his first-career complete-game shutout against the Cardinals in April.

Phillies Nuggets Player of the Game: Jean Segura

In his postgame press conference, McCutchen called Segura the “Steph Curry of baseball.” Curry can make threes when he wants to. Segura hits when he feels like it. He went 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles in today’s game following back-to-back walk-off heroics.
