Philadelphia Phillies outfield prospect and former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak exploded at the plate in the latest week of the minor-league season.
On Sunday, the 23-year-old extended his hitting streak for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs to 10 games to cap his strong offensive series against the Buffalo Bisons in Trenton.
Despite Moniak’s production, Lehigh Valley dropped five of six games against Buffalo to put its record at 27-38; the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils are 26-40; the High-A Jersey Shore BlueClaws are 29-37; the Low-A Clearwater Threshers are 32-33; the Florida Complex League Phillies entered Monday with an 8-6 record.
Moniak extends hitting streak
Moniak went 10-for-22 in his last six games, hitting .455/.458/.955 with three doubles, two home runs and a triple in that stretch. He recorded two hits in Sunday afternoon’s game, his 10th straight with a hit.
After a period of struggles earlier in the minor-league season, the left-handed hitter is now batting .245/.305/.462 with the IronPigs with 10 home runs, while seeing time at all three outfield positions.
Leverett jumps from Jersey Shore to Reading
It was quite the week for right-handed pitcher Adam Leverett. Last Monday, the 22-year-old was named Phillies Minor-League Pitcher of the Month for his strong June. By the end of the week, he earned a promotion to Class AA.
After earning his award, Leverett started for Jersey Shore on Wednesday, throwing two scoreless innings against the Brooklyn Cyclones.
He was then sent to Reading for the second time this season on Saturday. Leverett started Sunday’s game against the Portland Sea Dogs. He threw two innings, allowing four earned runs.
García homers twice in Clearwater
Shorstop Luis García showed out in a huge game on Friday, homering twice in a Threshers loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays.
The 20-year-old went 3-for-6 in the game with the two home runs and a double. He recorded four RBIs on the day.
García is batting .231/.338/.388 in 63 Low-A games this season after posting a .516 OPS at that level in 2019.
